So Fucking Cool

This past Wednesday I was flipping through the channels and something on the guide caught my eye. All it said was Plane Crash.

Flipping to Discovery revealed that this was an episode of Curiosity. The episode apparently originally aired on the 7th. It was -amazingly- 2 hours long. Basically, the idea was to remote crash a commercial aircraft, in this case a Boeing 727, in order to learn more about what happens in plane crashes and how engineers can make them safer. I wasn’t able to watch the entire thing but what I saw was incredible. If you can catch it, or find it on demand, I would highly recommend it.

Apparently this -crashing a plane in order to gain knowledge about a crash- has been done once before. However, the test was unsuccessful* and expensive and thus led the US government to cease looking into further testing.

One of the coolest things about this episode was that it allowed viewers to see what happens inside the plane during the crash. Something that before now has never been seen.

*How can you fail at crashing a plane?
